Beamshots of AAA flashlights, January 2010
This collection of beamshots includes some of the new AAA flashlights, but also some older ones. The penlight are 2xAAA, 3xAAA and a single 3xAAAA. The lights are (Same sequence as picture): 4Sevens Preon I, Titanium IlluminaTi, VersaTi ET10, Fenix LD01 XP-E, Fenix LD01 XR-E, ITP A3 EOS, LiteFlux LF2XT, 4Sevens Preon II, Sunlite Slim, Sunlite Slim2, Fenix LD05, Streamlight Stylus Pro, Sunlite SlimJr
Note: LD01 XR-E is the stainless steel version, the ordinary version looks exactly like the XP-E version, except from the front (Check entry on LD01 XR-E for photos).
All lights are tested with freshly charged eneloop batteries, except Sunlite, where I used alkaline batteries.
The new AAA flashlights are close in light output, except ET10 that is a bit special. But when looking at the penlights, there are some huge differences, the new leds has made some very powerful lights possible on small batteries.
This graph shows the all the brightness settings for all the lights, as can be seen only some of penlight has adjustable brightness. There are also huge differences in the low levels, the old LD01 does not have a really low level, most other multilevel lights has an acceptable low level.
Measuring the brightness at 1 meter gives an idea about the throw. This is not only depend on the amount of light from the flashlight, but also the size of the led and the reflector. Sunlite has a very good reflector and a small led, this gives a good throw, next in line is Fenix. Preon and IlluminaTi has a wider beam. ET10 has a very wide beam.
